New referees' courses are always getting added each year and MUST be at least 14 years old. To become a referee, you must be certified through the Mass State Referee Committee, by completing the new referee course (titled: New Grass Roots Referee - Entry Level).
- Register for the Course – Create an account at www.MassRef.net.
- Select a Course – Choose an available class from the "Course Selection" section. Spots are limited, so register early.
- Age Requirement – You must be 14 by the class date to register. If you turn 14 by April 30 but can't register online, create an account and email the course administrator (link on MassRef) to request manual registration.
- Purchase Equipment – A yellow referee shirt, flags (often included in starter kits), and a stopwatch are required. Kits are available from vendors like Official Sports (linked on MassRef).
- Gain Experience – New referees start as Assistant Referees (ARs) for U12 games and progress to higher levels with experience.
- Reimbursement – WYSA will reimburse the cost of the course and uniform at the end of the season after confirming participation.
